Everyone has seen on TV those commercials of people talking in someone else’s voice about the outrageous things they bought. This is a growing problem and actually effects thousands of people every year and it is not felt that one in twenty five Americans will be a victim.
The two most common identity thefts that happen are done online. This is done by email where someone is asking for personal information about you. It is called phishing or spoofing and the email will look like an important institution that you do business with. This can be your bank or investment company, a name that is familiar to you so you trust it.
If you feel this has happened to you then you need to right away cancel all your accounts and change any passwords that you have on accounts. Make that call to the company who you have credit with and let them know. Then, you must contact your local police and the three credit reporting agencies. You need only call one of them as they will notify the other two. This is certainly not a funny situation, just be careful who you give your information to online.
